These discussions are not all inclusive. They touch on their subject, but, do not go into any depth. They are intended to help you start thinking about subjects that you might want to dig deeper about.

Do it yourself
or
Hire a professional?

Before we start this discussion, let me quote a legend of the oilpatch, Red Adair: "If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an ametuer!"

With that in mind, let me point out that we are all specialists in our trade or occupation. We go into business or want to because we feel that we offer the best possible choice.

And, that opinion is usually a fair assesment. But, we need to remember that we are not specialists or even good amateurs in other fields of endeavor.

Now, you have a choice: 1) Build your own website or 2) hire a specialist.

With all the tools available in today's world, you can easily build your own website. One of my granddaughters built her first one before she was 10.

WIX.com or Wordpress.com offer templates that are easy to follow and produce some stunning sites. And, they are free.

You can use their templates and have a site up and running within a couple of hours with little learning curve. The best 10 website builders lists more easy to build tools that you can use.

There are any number of hosting services that offer discounts to use their tools to build your own site as well.

If you have the patience you can build a full scale order processing website on your own as well.

But, there are tips and shortcuts that the professionals know about. They can also use the same tools that are suggested above and have a site up in minutes.

Will the DIY site have all the whistles and bells that you want for your site? No!

Can your site be easily upgraded to a fully functional web presence? Well, the pro can do it, but, can you?

How do I know this? I've got over 30 years in this business and have been responsible for building and upgrading 100's of sites and 1,000's of pages.

I cannot fix my car when it acts up. I cannot fix my plumbing system when there is an issue. I cannot fly an airplane (never learned how). I can drive a car or a boat (small one not a sailboat), but, if a major calamity occurs I question whether I am equipped to solve it.

Thus, ends my sales pitch. I can recommend professionals to help you.
